4-Door Porsche in the Pipeline?!
by Alex Michalas

Go back a decade and you'd find Porsche being 100% dependent on the legendary 911. Come forward to 2001 and Porsche has successfully launched a new model line (the Boxster of course) and has, successfully, replaced the original 911 with the "new shape" (996) 911. Still, even with a 3rd model line in the pipeline (the Cayenne SUV is just months from being launched), our sources are suggesting that Porsche bosses believe that there is room for a 4th model line in their company for the 21st century.

What is this going to be? The most likely scenario talks about a big 2+2 coupe (a successor to the 928?) powered by a 450 hp twin-turbocharged V8 engine that could be on the road in 2005!

The pic shown here is the currently suggested shape of this 2+2 coupe which will, of course, go head to head with Ferrari's 550, Mercedes' CL and Aston Martin's Vanquish.

The story does not end here though as the same sources have suggested that the company's executives are positive towards the posibility of the forthcoming coupe's shape forming the basis for a full 4-seater, 4 door Porsche! Such a 4-door car, they report, could borrow the Cayenne's 4wd drivetrain.

How true can the above scenarios prove to be I hear you ask? Let's just wait till this year's Frankfurt MotorShow in September is my answer. The final production version of the Cayenne will certainly be there and there is more than a chance of more concepts being there...(in the meantime you can take a look at the latest Cayenne spy pic shown on the left here, with the VW Colorado sister-SUV to the right).

Oh and we are still waiting for developments on the Carrera GT front! What can we say? It just has to be exciting times for everybody at the Porsche factory.
