The World's Fastest Car is an AC Cobra? by Alex Michalas
Well yes there is more from British sportscar manufacturers! This time it's
AC that has prepared a big surprise for all of us at this year's British Motorshow because, according to AC at least, what you see here is the world's fastest accelerating car!
Called the AC 212S/C it combines a very light, yet rigid, F1-style carbon fibre chassis with a 3.5-litre 350 hp twin turbo engine straight from the Lotus Esprit
. AC bosses are claiming it will achieve a four second 0-60mph time, and they say it is capable of breaking the record for being the fastest car from standstill to 100mph and back to rest again. John Owen, chief engineer for AC Cars said: "We've been able to bring together three tremendous assets in the
same package. We've got the ultimate sports car looks of the iconic AC Cobra, we've developed the pioneering Formula One carbon fibre technology from the CRS, and we've
mated all of this to one of the most powerful engines available today."
AC have set the price of the 212 S/C to 69,000 pounds ($100,000) which sounds almost like a bargain given the supercar permormance of 4 seconds for the 0-60mph sprint and 155 mph of top
speed. The car is loosely based on the current AC Cobra model but considerable effort has been made to limit its weight to only 900kg. Of course, we can't wait for the 212S/C to actually hit the road to see if it really is the world's fastest accelerating production car!
