Hakkinen Drives McLaren F1 on Ice! by Alex on April 19, 2000 Well this topic may be a bit different from our normal
reporting on the latest news on this world's most desirable cars but we just couldn't stop ourselves from reporting on it!Two times Formula 1 World Champion, Mika Hakkinen, has
chosen a very innovative way to prepare for this week's British Formula 1 Grand Prix. He actually had the (speciallly made for publicity events) two seater
West McLaren F1 car shipped to Finland (his home country) where he put himself and the car in probably the toughest test an F1 car has ever faced: driving on an ice-covered local road!
He was accompanied on his drive on ice with a 800hp car by his wife Erja. Apparently he seemed to be enjoying himself as after the first few kilometres of getting used to the minimal grip conditions he
started going quite fast!
The 800hp two seater car was specially adjusted for the
situation using the softest possible suspension setting and specially designed Bridgestone tyres for the low grip conditions.
Although all this was much more a publicity event rather than
any actual test of the car we have to admit that it left us quite amazed. As you can see the photos of a Formula 1 car, that
we usually see going around tracks all over the world, driving around on ice are certainly interesting! |
