BMW's New M3 Convertible is Here! by Alex Michalas
Ever since the mid-80s when the first generation E30 BMW M3 was introduced, the M3 has been a
really unique car, competing with cars in the supercar league for performance but still being based on the 3-series sedan and offering enough room for 4 people and their luggage. Even more so
for the M3 Convertible then, which is everything the M3 coupe is but also offers the joys of open-top motoring; it probably is the world's fastest and most desirable convertible 4-seater.
So, BMW's unveiling of the convertible version of the new E46 M3 is quite big news. The car is powered by the same 3.2lt 343 hp engine that powers the coupe version. Accelerating to 62 mph (100
km/h) takes 5.5 seconds while top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. A fully electrically operated roof, electrically
operated sports seats and integrated belt system help make the M3 Convertible a really practical open-top four-seater.
Prices will be announced in early 2001 and the car should hit the streets shortly thereafter.
