Legendary supercar manufacturer Maserati has shocked fans by revealing plans for an amazing
'quattro' off-roader. The 4x4 is only one of a surprising range of stylish models, including a super saloon, which is set to breathe a new lease of life into the Italian firm. The news comes as Ferrari and Maserati
boss Luca di Montezemolo pushes ahead with plans to boost production through increased car ranges - up from today's two-tier strategy to a three-fold model line-up. Communications director Antonio de Almeida told Auto
Express that a product explosion is imminent. He said: "Our research shows us Maserati has the potential to sustain sales of 10,000 units a year. It is a target we're serious about, and meeting it means launching
three all-new models by 2005."
While it's the 4x4 SUV that will set tongues wagging, the first new car planned is a Spider version of the acclaimed 3200GT. Unlike some rivals, its design is said to be unique
rather than shared with the coupé. Its complex shape means it is not simply a matter of chopping off the roof - a major restyle is involved. Due to be launched in summer 2001, it will kickstart Maserati's drive into the
US, together with the coupé. The newcomer will be pitched as a more exclusive alternative to Jaguar's XKR convertible and Porsche's 911 Cabriolet. The loss of a roof should add roughly £5,000 to the 3200GT's £60,575 UK
price.
Hot on the heels of the Spider comes an all-new sports saloon, successor to the visually challenging Quattroporte. Styled by the legendary Pininfarina design house, it is said by insiders to be 'stunning', and
its introduction will herald the launch of a fresh V8 engine. With so few falling for the peculiar charms of today's car, the replacement can't arrive soon enough.
Beyond this lies the exciting, upmarket,
all-activity vehicle. Currently undergoing feasibility studies and extensive consumer research, once it gets the go-ahead the firm will aim to get it in showrooms in 2004. Power would come from the new V8, enabling it
to tackle BMW's X5 4x4.
