Mercedes and McLaren Prepare SLR. Mercedes and McLaren have found an unlikely basis for their SLR supercar project: TVR's Cerbera. The British firm's wild coupé has
been called on as a 'rolling chassis' for development of the SLR's supercharged V8 engine and gearbox. The pairing of Germany's elitist brand and Blackpool's builder of 'rollercoaster-ride machines' is not as far
fetched as it seems. Initially, McLaren and Mercedes looked at the Cerbera to see what makes it such an invigorating drive, in a bid to replicate characteristics in the SLR. Since then they have been developing the
supercharged V8 SLR unit. Said to develop 500bhp, the powertrain needs a robust and dynamic chassis to let engineers carry out development mileage. |
