NEW Lotus Elise!! by Alex Michalas This is breaking news that we have just received: Lotus has
just unveiled photos and specs of a major overhaul/facelift to the Elise! This is not an all-new model but we are really
talking about lots of changes over the current mode here.
So, in a largely unexpected move, Lotus has performed whatever changes it thought were required to keep the 4-year
old Elise up to date and able to keep up with new competitors like the GM/Opel Speedster/Vauxhall V220 sportscar (more info on it soon) which is actually based on the Elise.
What do you think of the new exterior design shown in the photos here? Lotus designers claim that they wanted to emphasize even more the uniqueness of the car, as well as construct a better aerodynamic
shape. Under these guidelines, the new front end resembles the upcoming Lotus V6-powered M250 coupe (more info on it soon too...) while the new back end has been tweaked to improve
aerodynamics in high speeds. There is a new more usable hood too, something that was really needed as any owner of the current Elise will confirm that the current hood is not practicall at all. The inside of the car has been revised as well. There is some
more soundproofing as well as some actual storage spaces for things you may want to carry with you when in the Elise (the previous model did not really give you an option of
carrying anything with you). The door opening has also been altered and apparently it is now easier to get in and out.
What about the amazing roadholding of the current Elise? Has
the new model retained it? Well actually Lotus claims that the handling characteristics of the Elise have been improved! Stiffer springs and new dampers mean that the new Elise has a better ride as well as even better
handling. The steering feel and response has also been improved. The engine is the same 1.8lt 122hp unit. Modifications have been carried out on it, destined to make it
compliant with the latest emission rules as well as give it a sharper throttle response. Overall, Lotus claims that the quality of many other inside things around the car has been improved
mainly as a result of better manufacturing processes. Finally, all these have come with a small increase in the car's
weight which is now up 20kg to 710kg but, still, perfromance figures are claimed to be 5.7 seconds for accelerating to 60mph from standstill. This is 0.1 sec better
than the outcoming model and should basically be credited to the new close-ratio gearbox.
That's great news then! The Elise appears to have kept all of its amazing pure character and appeal while at the same time
it has become a bit more of a practical car to own and run. So, the only question that remains is what will Lotus enthusiasts think about the new styling. The opinions here in FantasyCars.com are very positive at the
moment... We really like the new look. Why don't you go to our Messageboard and voice your opinion as well!
Let's also note that the new Elise will be present in next week's British Motorshow which we will be comprehensively covering so stay tuned for more details! |
