New BMW 6-Series Coupe! The 6-Series is all set to roll again as BMW
returns to the big coupé market. According to suppliers involved in developing the road-going car, a successor to the classic 6-Serie which ceased production in 1990 is hidden in the
depths of BMW, signed off and all set to cause a stir.
Those who have seen the production-ready car say it has been toned down from the awesome Z9 concept (shown here in the
pictures) that was designed by Adrian van Hooydonk. In particular the middle section has changed, as BMW had to do away with the novel door arrangement that could operate in normal and gullwing fashion.
The news of the 6-Series' return comes as BMW tries to increase its worldwide sales. BMW's board member for financial affairs, Dr Helmut Panke, announced at the launch of the new M3 that the firm
was looking to "sell significantly more than 800,000 cars worldwide". He added: "We have a number of surprises up our sleeve."
Among these is known to be the next 7-Series. The 6-Series coupé will follow in early 2002, based around
the aluminium platform technology of the latest Z8 roadster. No one will confirm what engine will be used, but
it'll probably be a version of the 400bhp V8 which serves the M5 so well.
While the new 6-Series follows the thinking of the old car, company insiders say it will be bigger and
more space-efficient. They also claim the technology on board will make Mercedes' CL look like a cluttered, ill-conceived and out-of-date piece of design. |
