New Porsche Boxster Turbo! The Porsche Boxster is to get a new look for next year and a pair of turbos. Caught testing at the company's Weissach track in Germany,
the picture shows the 2001 model year version of Porsche's entry-level 2.7-litre car.
A more distinctive front spoiler and clear indicator lenses have been added, also a reprofiled rear bumper and new pop-up rear
wing.
Porsche wants to distance the Boxster from its 911 big brother, as buyers have objected to paying
nearly double for a car which looks almost identical. The models will be further differentiated by a facelift for the 911, to be carried out at the same time as the Boxster's revamp. New front and rear
headlamps across the 911 range will give them the same look as the recently unveiled Turbo variant.
Interior revisions will also be included, giving the 911 the quality look and feel inside needed to rival
models such as the new Jaguar F-Type and baby Aston Martin. A targa version of the 911 is also set
to be unveiled, boasting a full-length glass roof which slides underneath the rear window.
It is the proposed turbo version of the Boxster which will get fans drooling, though. Designed to take
on the planned performance versions of Audi's TT roadster and the soft-top variant of the latest
BMW M3, our inside information indicates that the blown Boxster will produce around 320bhp. Porsche will probably opt for turbocharging the 2.7-litre flat-six rather than the 3.2 from the current
Boxster S, which would make it powerful enough to overshadow the substantially more expensive 911. Expect to see the Boxster turbo next summer.
Porsche is set for a busy 2001. Besides the revised Boxster (photo) and 911 ranges, it will launch its first off-roader, the Cayenne. It is intended to be a sportier alternative to the Range Rover. |
