Suzuki, an important player on the small class car market in places such as India or at home in Japan is trying to make a comeback in Europe as well, with their new Baleno five-door compact hatchback premiering during the 2015 IAA Frankfurt motor show.

The all new Baleno five-door compact hatchback is arriving to reinforce the Suzuki model range that has just got a new lease of life thanks to the all-new Vitara small SUV. Whiel the Vitara will play well with the European market because of its new found love for crossovers and SUVs, the Baleno compact is an entirely different course and the Japanese automaker made sure not to pit it against the European heavyweights – instead delivering it as a very affordabel alternative.

The series production models isvery close in terms of styling to the iK-2 concept that has been showcased earlier this year during the Geneva Motor Show in March. We noticed the toned down front styling but fortunately the overall layout has been kept and the design looks clean and simple – maybe enough to win the heart of consumers looking for a decent and affordable hatchback.

The concept had dimensions that were down at the lower spectrum of the compact class and we reckon the Baleno will follow on those figures: 4023 mm length, 1920 mm width, 1450 mm height and a 2520 mm wheelbase. This means the Baleno will compete with models such as the Dacia Sandero hatchback or the Skoda Rapid Spaceback, promising to be just as spacious inside and generous when it comes to cargo capacity.

Under the hood the model will feature a newly produced direct-injection turbocharged 1.0-liter BOOSTERJET engine that also makes use of a new system developed inhouse called Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) – it will sport an starter generator to crank up the engine. This means higher fuel efficiency, especially given the fact that Suzuki has used a lightweight construction, with the company also stating the model will reach out to meet the “dynamic performance expectations” for the class.
