The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) has been the stage of the official world premiere of the 2017 GMC Acadia crossover SUV.

The all new model features an impressive weight loss cure as it tips the scales by a full 700 pounds (317.5 kilograms) less than its predecessor thanks to the increased use of high-strength, press-hardened steels. The lightness effect has also been obtained by simply making the Acadia smaller: .2 inches (18.2 centimeters) shorter and with a 6.4-inch smaller wheelbase, while also being 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) narrower and .9 inches (9.9 cm) lower. This means the base model now only weighs 3,956 lbs (1,794 kg). Because of the reduced dimensions, the eight-passenger version has been axed and the Acadia remains a three-row crossover with space for seven people – and also with a respectable cargo capacity of 79 cubic feet (up by 9 cu. ft.) when the second row is also folded.

Engines offered on the 2017 Acadia start with a four-cylinder 2.5-liter unit delivering 194 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 190 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm for an estimated fuel economy of 22 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Next up is the 3.6-liter V6 churning out 310 hp at 6,600 rpm and 271 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm with an estimated fuel economy of 17 mpg city / 25 mpg highway. Both are mated to a six speed auto transmission linked to a front wheel drive system, with an optional AWD also present. GMC has upped the stakes in terms of safety in the Acadia: Front Pedestrian Braking, Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Alert, a new Surround Vision camera and the IntelliBeam automatic headlamp high-beam control.

The model also features an all new All Terrain version with an active twin clutch system and a dedicated mode for improved off-road capabilities – though this one eschews the presence of the third row of seats. It’s highlighted by a body-colored grille surround, unique wheels, black chrome trim, as well as some minor cabin modifications.
