Dressing in style costs. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe adds $5000 to the price of a comparable sedan at $65,900 before on-road costs.

The extra dollars buy a highly specified car with styling cues — especially the front lights and diamond-grille treatment — derived from the S-Class coupe.

Mercedes describes the coupe as the sportiest C-Class variant. The range starts with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo (135kW/300Nm) matched to a seven-speed auto.

Default gear includes automatic seat belt feeders, LED headlamps, 360-degree imaging, satnav and auto parking. Safety kit includes nine airbags, semi-autonomous emergency braking, blind spot assist and driver attention monitor.

The wheelbase is up by 80mm and the car is 40mm wider than the previous coupe, translating into greater leg and shoulder room front and rear.

The sole diesel is the C250d at $74,900. This buys a 2.1-litre turbodiesel (150kW/500Nm) paired with a nine-speed auto to claim 4.4L/100km on the combined cycle.

Styling upgrades include 19-inch rims, leather upholstery and keyless entry and start. Safety supplements extend to adaptive cruise control with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert and active lane keeping and blind spot assistance.

Real performance starts with the C300. This $83,400 stealth fighter sprints from rest to 100km/h in 6.0 seconds, thanks to a retuned 2.0-litre (180kW/ 370Nm) in conjunction with a "sports exhaust". Burmester audio and premium satnav are no-cost items.

Blowing the budget is the Mercedes-AMG C63 S coupe at $162,400, or $900 more than a BMW M4 and $4900 dearer than an Audi RS5.

The AMG is propelled by a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 (375kW/ 700Nm) and covers the 0-100km/h in 3.9 secs. Keep your licence handy...

To handle those outputs, AMG fits an electronic locking rear differential, active engine mounts, composite brakes and bespoke suspension employing a new four-link front axle setup.

The C63 S is kitted out with Nappa leather trim, heated sports front seats, sunroof, head-up display and digital TV tuner as standard.

Those in search of the ultimate look-at-me compact coupe can always opt for the Edition 1 model, in grey with fluoro-yellow livery, at a further $10,500 premium.

Beyond the paintjob, there are ceramic brakes and blinged-up aerodynamics front and rear.

The range will be complete when the Mercedes-AMG C43 coupe arrives late this year. With a predicted price of $120,000, the entry AMG will have a 3.0-litre V6 twin turbo, good for 270kW/520Nm.
