After seven years on sale overseas, Toyota Australia has finally added a petrol/electric hybrid version of its number one selling model, the Corolla.

The Japanese-built car will join the Prius, Prius c, Prius v and Camry on Toyota’s local hybrid fleet, and will be sold as a single, well-specced hatch for $1000 more than the top version of the smaller Prius c at $26,990 plus on-roads.

Its drivetrain is essentially identical to that of the third generation Prius, which has just been superseded by an all-new version of Toyota’s original ground-breaking hybrid hatch.

A 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine generating 73kW is complemented by a 650v electric motor that makes 65kW. Total output for the Corolla hybrid hatch is 100kW; the motors output their power at different rates, so it’s not just a matter of adding the two together.

A bank of nickel-metal hydride batteries under the Corolla’s rear seats provides energy storage, and is recharged via both the petrol engine and regenerative braking. It can also do up to two kilometres on pure electric power at seeds of up to 45km/h.

The powerplants are backed by a continuously variable transmission (CVT) driving through the front wheels.

The Corolla Hybrid is available to order now, and will sit just underneath the range-topping ZR in the Corolla hatch line-up.

Its big selling point, of course, is its fuel economy figure. Toyota says the Corolla will return 4.1 litres per 100km on the combined cycle; the new Prius, meanwhile, is quoted at 3.4 litres per 100km. A petrol-powered Corolla, by way of comparison, returns 6.1 litres per 100km.

The Corolla Hybrid is priced $3500 below Toyota’s Camry Hybrid, the next most affordable petrol/electric car on sale locally. It’s also $11,000 cheaper than the mechanically similar and similarly sized Lexus CT200h.

The radically styled new Prius, meanwhile, starts at $34,990, albeit with less standard equipment. Other hybrid contenders, like BMW’s 330e and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, easily clear the $50,000 price barrier.

The Corolla Hybrid will come standard with brake-by-wire front stoppers, dual-zone climate control, LED running lights and keyless entry, along with satellite navigation, 16-inch alloys and cloth interior.

It will also score Toyota Link connected mobility and bi-LED headlights.
