The South Australian Government is considering the merits of a Belgian entrepreneur's plan to buy Holden's Elizabeth manufacturing plant to continue making Commodores and other vehicles at the site for years to come.

Automotive Transformation Minister Kyam Maher has confirmed the government has met with Guido Dumarey, who runs the Punch Corporation, to discuss his proposal to take over the Elizabeth plant once Holden closes its Australian manufacturing operations in 2017.

"I have met Mr Dumarey twice to discuss his proposals," he said.

"The State Government welcomes any sustainable proposals that would generate jobs in South Australia, especially in the manufacturing sector."

Mr Maher did not comment on when the meetings took place or when a decision was likely.

Mr Dumarey, who turned around the fortunes of an ailing French GM transmission plant he bought in 2013, wanted to use the Elizabeth site to contract other manufacturers, including Holden, and build their cars.

Mr Dumarey said he could see a "unique opportunity (in Elizabeth) to build a different but viable premium vehicle manufacturing and export operation in Australia". He hoped to reach an agreement by mid-2016.
