The convertible supercar has seen its order books opened in Europe, with the price in its home market starting from €179,000, or about $199,000.

One of the more exciting drop-top supercars available right now, the R8 Spyder has a naturally-aspirated, 5.2-litre V10 engine that will give you the best tunes – alongside a dish of 540 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque (540 Nm). Audi comments on the credentials with a 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint time of just 3.6 seconds, as well as a maximum speed of 198 mph (318 km/h) – if you can handle the wind with the top down. You do get half a second behind the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, but then again even brothers from the same mother have to be different.

The mid-mounted engine has been linked to a seven-speed, dual-clutch S tronic automatic transmission that sends all the power to all four wheels using the Quattro system. Up to 100 percent can be swayed to the front or rear axles, with Audi claiming it delivers a “particularly dynamic and precise handling.” We’ll see about that when compared to the coupe version, but Audi also reminds us the Spyder is now 50 percent stiffer than its predecessor. Even the weight penalty over the Coupe version is very limited – just 37 pounds, with a total dry weight of 3,554 lbs. The model is also expected to reach the North American market sometimes later this year.
