The BMW X4 M40i has been unveiled and detailed just a few days after information and images of the performance SUV leaked on the internet. As revealed earlier this week, the BMW X4 M40i is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol engine. Based on the unit used in the X4 xDrive35i, the M40i’s motor has been upgraded with components from the M3 and M4, giving the M40i a total of 265kW of power and 465Nm of torque to play with. The revised engine is mated exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a four-drive system that has “rear-wheel drive characteristics” and is able to distributing torque, as needed, between the rear wheels. The M40i’s drivetrain is capable of launching the X4 from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds and onwards to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. With its extra 40kW of power and 65Nm of torque, the M40i is 0.6 seconds faster to 100km/h than the xDrive35i. As standard BMW X4 M40i rides on 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with Michelin Primacy run-flat tyres (245/45 at the front, and 275/40 at the rear). The M40i can also be upgraded to 20-inch rims with Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber (245/40 at the front, and 275/35 at the rear). Visually, the M40i is distinguished from lesser X4s by virtue of its standard M Sport styling pack, which is augmented with satin grey elements on the front fascia and wing mirrors. Out the back, the M40i also features a new exhaust system with two single tips on either side of the revised rear bumper, and new tuning that’s said to deliver a “charismatic sound”. In order to improve the car’s fuel economy figures, automatic engine stop/start and brake energy recuperation are fitted as standard. Under the EU’s combined test cycle, the X4 M40i is said to drink 8.6L/100km. Click here to see more photos of the BMW X4 M40i.
