Karnataka bans surge pricing for taxis

Karnataka becomes the first state in the country to ban surge pricing.

Surge pricing was essentially a hike in fares during peak hours by taxi aggregators Ola and Uber. This would make the helpless customer pay more and allow the taxi driver to benefit from this. What always seemed “unfair” was that the justification of the surge was never explained. The surge in price goes up to 4.0X, meaning a customer has to pay 400 INR on a trip that would’ve cost 100 INR.
