Lamborghini will exclusively mate the Urus to V8 with twin-turbo

The upcoming Lamborghini Urus sport utility vehicle is shaping up to be an entirely different breed of vehicle for the Italian supercar manufacturer, as we can see form the latest revealed details. The other day we found out the mild off-roader would try to retain what is left of the driver’s handling pleasure (as much as it can be had in a crossover) by eschewing any addition of autonomous driving tech. Now the prodigal Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann has delivered another important information – this time around regarding the upcoming model’s powertrain option. The chief executive recently confirmed the Urus would ditch the company’s usual V10 and V12 naturally aspirated power plants in favor of a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine. He also confirmed the engine option will remain exclusive to the SUV and any hopes of seeing it under the hoods of the Huracan or Aventador might need to be shelved. “On the supersports cars, we are convinced that the choices we have made with the naturally aspirated engines are still the right ones,” he went on to say during a recent interview with British magazine Autocar. Winkelmann did hint future models could be paired to the downsized engine though he said naturally aspirated V10 and V12 are a go at Lamborghini for the supercars as long as nothing better appears on the horizon. Lamborghini Research and Development director Maurizio Reggiani also previously hinted the twin-turbo V8 will serve as the “most powerful in the class” – and in our opinion would also represent a choice that makes the Urus less prone to eating into Bentley Bentayga’s newly established niche.
