Mitsubishi's successful rugged-duty SUV, the Pajero Sport, will finally be offered in seven-seat guise – and at no extra cost to buyers.

It’s only available on variants that are fitted with full-length curtain airbags, though, which rules out the $45,000 base model GLX.

The $48,000 GLS and top-tier $52,750 Exceed can be ordered with a pair of third-row 60:40 split seats as a no-cost option, and both will also offer third-row air vents along with the added protection of the curtain airbags.

The Triton ute-based wagon has been a strong seller so far for Mitsubishi, sitting second only to Isuzu’s M-UX.

The third row will fold flat into the floor to minimise intrusion into the cargo space when not in use. Mitsubishi didn’t offer any specs on the revised cargo area size, but the five-seater’s 673/1624 litre cargo capacity will be diminished, especially with the seats in place.

Mitsubishi says a storage box behind the upright seats will help, but with the seat backs up against the rear window, load space appears compromised.

The Triton ute-based wagon has been a strong seller so far for Mitsubishi, launching in late 2015 and outselling the likes of the Ford Everest and Toyota Fortuner so far in 2016, sitting second only to Isuzu’s M-UX.

All variants run Mitsubishi’s latest 2.4-litre turbo diesel that makes 133kW and 430Nm, and it’s backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission that’s connected to an all-wheel-drive system.

An electronic park brake, reversing camera, an Off-road Terrain Control System, keyless entry and powered side mirrors are all standard for the Pajero Sport, while moving up to the GLS adds dual-zone climate control, a leather interior, a rear locking diff and automatic headlights and wipers.

The top-spec Exceed scores blind-spot monitors, heated front seats and a 360-degree camera.

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Australia will reportedly soldier on with the ageing Pajero large 4WD, upgrading the venerable workhorse to Euro 5 engine specification.

There’s no word on when – or even whether - Mitsubishi will replace the 16-year-old truck, but with a further tightening of emissions regulations, the company’s impending sale to Nissan in the wings and that brand’s recent axing of its large Patrol, it’s looking more and more unlikely.
