British specialist manufacturer Land Rover is apparently ready to hit back at the manufacturers that trumped its SUV game – notably BMW and Mercedes who have a head start in the coupe-SUV segment.

The most recent rumor flying around the mill has the British carmaker ready to embrace the newest niche in the SUV sector after failing to catch wind of the success of the coupe-SUVs. Now after BMW and Mercedes-Benz both have two offerings each (compact and full size models) starting next year Land Rover will also become a competitor for the German offerings. According to the report, the production series model would be in the high-ranking category and might come with the Range Rover Sport Coupe nameplate, using the Jaguar F-Pace aluminum body and knowhow. It will be about 185 inches (4.7 meters) long, which is a tad smaller than the BMW X6 an inside Land Rover’s model line it will fill the gap between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport.

It could also be called the Evoque Plus and the model would use an upscale build with a four-seat setup and will deliver a “more intimate” interior than the rest of the Land Rover roster. That won’t be a problem since it would employ a “dramatic” sloping roofline that will seriously limited rear space – and also the egress and entry will be handled via “minimal openings.” By the way, the rumor mill points to powertrains using hybrid and even all-electric setups aside from the rich roster of petrol and diesel engines.
