The German automaker has recently introduced the awaited GLC Coupe during the New York International Auto Show as a competitor to the BMW X4.

Now a new report is calling Mercedes to also rival the newly minted open top Range Rover Evoque Cabrio. Automakers are looking to fill every gap they can and while the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet was not the most good looking SUV out there it may have set up yet another niche (the Japanese company is responsible for the creation of compact crossovers with the Qashqai and of subcompact crossovers with the Juke). The very small niche was followed with the Land Rover range Rover Evoque cabrio and now Mercedes is reportedly considering an entry into the newly minted field.

That’s because convertible SUVs might become just as fashionable as the crossover coupes and Mercedes this time around wants to be among the first to offer models into the category. According to the report a Mercedes manager possibly hinted at the creation of a GLC Cabriolet. Michael Kelz, chief engineer for the GLC, CLS, and E-Class, commented how he is a fan of the Evoque Convertible and drop top SUVs might be rising in popularity so the GLC Cabriolet would have a viable business case. “It would be fun, and it’s actually not that much of an engineering challenge,” Kelz was quoted, as the model would naturally inherit the platform used to underpin both the GLC and GLC Coupe. There’s only one catch though, because if the project were to receive the green light another model in the lineup would have to cease production.
