Back during the Frankfurt Motor Show last year when the second generation Tiguan compact SV first appeared, the automaker confirmed a long wheelbase option was also in the development pipeline.

With such a model of course destined to first show up in China – where clients really love increased back-seat room – it so happens the SUV has been spied… in China. Better yet, the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan XL has been caught wearing no camouflage. It will be produced locally by SAIC Volkswagen, and the XL version is of course noticeably larger than the standard model. And this is not only due to the longer wheelbase, but also because of the larger rear overhang needed to accommodate the third row of seats. Looking closer, we can also spot bigger rear doors, as well as a modified D-pillar that now has an upward slope towards the rear quarter windows. Opinions might be split as to the looks of the model – but that’s always the case with such modifications.

Under the longer body the same technology as in the regular Tiguan will be found. The Tiguan XL will be available in front and 4Motion AWD guises, with different powertrains depending on the market. The Chinese prefer gasoline power, so we bet on a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with more than 200 hp. In Europe, the entire family of the 2.0-liter TDI will for sure become available. What we don’t know is whether the XL will also get the plug in hybrid version that is coming on the standard Tiguan.
