The Tesla Model S P90D rarely loses a straight-line battle, especially when it’s equipped with Ludicrous mode. But can the quick electric car beat a passenger airplane with two big jet engines down a long runway?

To find out, the Australian airliner Qantas paired one of its Boeing 737-800 airplanes against a P90D with Ludicrous mode at the Avalon Airport near Melbourne. The goal? Be the first machine to reach the end of the 1.9-mile runway.

The Tesla certainly has the hardware to make this a close race. Equipped with two motors (one up front and another at the back), the Model S P90D Ludicrous makes 762 hp and ran to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds in our testing. That’s quicker than a number of supercars we’ve tested including the Nissan GT-R and the Lamborghini Aventador.

Meanwhile, the 737-800 is packing two jet engines that produce over 50,000 pounds of thrust, and has a cruising speed of over 500 mph.

Not surprisingly, the relatively lighter Tesla had a strong jump at the start of the race, with its two motors instantly doling out maximum torque. The 737, however, closed the gap once it reached take off speed, well before the end of the runway. It’s a close race that you can watch in the video below.
