The jury has called it – the World Car Awards committee has decided upon the winning models of the 2016 World Car of the Year automotive rumble.

On the sidelines of the 2016 New York Auto Show, which has been full of interesting models and even surprises, the World Car Awards jury of 73 international automotive journalists has decided who should wear the automotive industry’s crown for the year. As such, the 2016 World Car of the Year has been designated the Mazda MX-5 Miata. This is by no means the only prize the iconic Japanese roadster has gained since it has been translated into a new generation but it has the potential to be the most important. Additionally, during the same ceremony the model that has also been declined in Europe and America as the Fiat / Abarth 124 Spider has also been granted the trophy attributed to the World Car Design of the Year category.

The Green Car of the Year award went to the Toyota Mirai – probably the most advanced automobile in production today (aside from exotic supercars, of course, and soon splitting the honor with Honda’s Clarity Fuel Cell) – which managed to outscore the BMW 330e, Chevrolet Volt, Toyota Prius, and Volkswagen Passat GTE. Those not interested in green aspects of the auto industry might take a peek at the roster of winners for the World Performance Car of the Year, which crowned the Audi R8 Coupe ahead of contenders such as the Chevrolet Camaro, Honda Civic Type R, Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe, and Range Rover Sport SVR. Lastly, but certainly not the least, the World Luxury Car of the Year was named the new BMW 7 Series, beating the competition represented by the Audi Q7, Jaguar XF, Mercedes GLE Coupe, and Volvo XC90.
