We’ve tested the new Ford Mustang

During the local launch event of the new Ford Mustang generation, we have taken the muscle car in its two available versions for a quick spin on the track and not only. The new Ford Mustang is currently in its sixth generation. It has been officially unveiled back in late 2013, for the first time ever, and it is now available for order on the Old Continent as well. The popular muscle car is bringing a few extra tweaks compared to its predecessor and this includes the usage of a four-cylinder engine, for the first time ever. For the European version, Ford has dropped the entry-level 3.7L V6 used over-seas and the model is still not getting the “blue oval” badges on the front grille, on the wings, on the rear end or on the steering wheel and there is no need for that because everyone knows what a Mustang is. Engine and Transmission In Europe, Ford is offering the Mustang in two versions. The entry-level is powered by a 2.3 liter four-cylinder EcoBoost, which is capable of putting down a total of 317 HP (233 kW) and 434 Nm (318 lb-ft) of torque. From 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph), this version needs 5.8 seconds. The other variant available is the Mustang GT, which has a 5.0 liter V8 engine under its hood, with 421 HP (309 kW) and 530 Nm (390 lb-ft) of torque. The 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint takes 4.8 seconds in it. In the U.S., Ford is also offering an entry-level 3.7L V6, with 300 HP (223 kW) and 365 Nm (270 lb-ft) of torque. During our test drive we’ve had the chance to go in both versions of the muscle car and we must tell you that we were kind of suspicious about the EcoBoost unit because we thought that the muscle car touch would be lost. Oh, how wrong we were because this is really the best engine you can have on your Mustang if you live in Europe. There is enough power to get you from A to B in a “supercar wannabe” and it is also perfect for a fun day at the track. We won’t even start talking about the insurance policies and other costs which honestly aren’t justifying the extra 100 HP and 100 Nm offered by the 5.0l V8. Don’t get us wrong, you will feel the difference between the 2.3l and the 5.0l engines quite easily but there isn’t such a huge gap in between them as we initially believed. The only noticeable effect was in a straight line, on the track, where the EcoBoost required the 5th gear while the V8 could have similar performance without shifting out of fourth. We also have to tell you about the noise made by both units, or by the GT at least, because you won’t be impressed in the sound of the EcoBoost. Fuel Consumption Ford says that the average figure of the 2.3l EcoBoost manual stands at 8.2L / 100 km, which is more than reasonable for a vehicle with more than 300 HP and rear-wheel drive. We are not sure on how much it will be eating in the city because during our test drive we were out of the urban environment pretty fast but we will tell you that in an economical driving, you will get as low as 6.1L / 100km. However, on the highway, in 6th gear, at 130 km/h, at 2,750 rpm, the Mustang EcoBoost will be eating about 8.8L / 100km, which isn’t bad at all. In the range-topping Ford Mustang EcoBoost version, the official fuel consumption figures stand at 13.5L / 100km in the city and 9.6L / 100km on the highway. Again, we are not sure on the fuel consumption for the urban environment but on the highway, we’ve managed to obtain as low as 9.1L / 100km. Push the throttle hard outside the cities and the trip computer will even indicate 16L – 17L eaten every 100 km so we believe that on a daily commute, the muscle car will be eating close to 20L / 100km, depending on the traffic situations. However, don’t forget that we are talking about a 5.0 liter V8 engine. The Ride The Mustang is a surprisingly comfortable vehicle. Its suspension has been set to offer you the most from fast driving on a track and also from going to the supermarket, so you cannot really ask anything more about it. If you are concerned that the rear-wheel drive might make you fly into a tree, don’t touch any of the safety systems of the car and you will have no problem. You won’t be able to drift either, but it’s not like you want to change your tires every day.Interior Design An American car is not really a benchmark for finesse when it comes to the quality of materials used or the shape of objects so don’t expect anything different for the new Mustang. However, if you have set foot inside the previous generation, you will quickly learn the fact that it is years in front of it. The quality of the plastics has increased but my personal opinion is that some of these will still become loose in a few years and give you a headache. The steering wheel has a retro look, you are getting features like an infotainment system, heated and cooled front seats, keyless go, buttons inspired from the cockpits of fighter jets to control the Driving Mode, to disengage the traction control, to put the emergency lights and so on. The climate control is a dual-zone, you also get a lot of controls fitted to the steering wheel, two necessary cup holders and a place to store your mobile phone as well. The leather surfaces combined with the brushed aluminum ones are transforming the interior of the Mustang into the one of a true sports car, bringing it closer to what we need here in Europe and if we are going to compare the prices, we will find out that the vehicle doesn’t really have a rival over here, in terms of performance at least. I thing which I personally enjoyed was the handbrake lever because Ford didn’t fall into the electric parking brake “trend”. Overall, the cabin of the new Mustang is a nice place to be in, the seats are comfortable and are providing enough side support and you can even take it on longer journeys without feeling exhausted once you have reached your destination. Likes / Dislikes I particularly enjoyed the exterior and interior design, the torque figure in both versions, the reasonable fuel consumption in the EcoBoost, the maneuverability and the engine sound in the V8. On the other hand, the V8 has an enormous fuel consumption for the 21st century and for Europe at least, some materials are in a low quality, the artificial engine sound in the EcoBoost is making it feel cheap and the fact that there isn’t enough space on the rear seats for two adults. Safety The new generation of the Ford Mustang hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP yet but it has ended up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over-seas, where it managed to obtain a maximum five-star safety rating.
