No 4-door E46 M3 making you depressed? Well here's something just as good: Alpina's B3. The engine is similar to its predecessors (also on this page) but with a 100cc bump in displacement, 15 more hp, 5 more Nm of torque and one of the most gorgeous designs of any Alpina (BMW, really) car in history. To achieve this increase in power extremely light pistons as well as a newly developed crankshaft have been used in conjunction with a new torsional-vibration damper, sustaining permanent revs of up to 7200 rpm with ease.
Alpina have also fitted completely new intake and exhaust systems. The
standard gearbox is a Getrag six-speed unit but the five-speed Switch-Tronic
box is available as an option. Exterior differences include a new front and
rear spoiler while on the inside a hand sewn 3-spoke steering wheel, new
instruments and Sports seats in anthracite with blue/green stripes are the
decor. The price is great, so is the practicality and so is, most importantly,
the performance. What more could you want? - by Traian Popescu
