When it was introduced in 1981, the B9 was the first Alpina
to be based on the e28-series BMW. 4 years later, Alpina introduced a new more
powerful model called the B10 3.5. The B9 included new cylinder heads,
camshafts and higher compression Mahle pistons as well as a five speed Getrag
gearbox, increasing power by an extra 27 horsepower over the 218 produced by
the stock BMW 528i. The B10 added the engine from the B6 3.5 which produced
another 16 hp over the B9. Traditional Alpina interior and exterior touches
were added, features explained on other Alpina pages on this site. Save for the
badges, however, the B10 and B9 are externally identical. The performance
unleashed is, to say the least, very impressive for a car over a decade and a
half old. 500 B9s were produced in total with 64 RHD. - by Traian Popescu
