Audi RS4 2000

Audi RS4 2000 Photo 198 Based on the Audi S4, the RS4 just like its predecessor, the RS2, is available only in Avant form. The biturbo 2.7-litre V6 is similar to the one found in the S4 but with 130 and 67 more horsepower and lb-ft of torque, respectively. To 62mph (100 km/h) the RS4 is 0.5 seconds faster than the RS2, and reaches 125 mph (200km/h) in only 17.0 seconds. That last time is one second faster than a BMW Z8 and over seven seconds faster than a Jaguar XKR. To achieve this level of performance, the S4 twin turbo engine boasts redesigned cylinder heads from Cosworth, bigger turbochargers with larger intercoolers, a higher boost pressure, a recalibrated engine management system and a free-flow twin tailpipe. Even with a pair of turbos available, lag is still quite noticeable, especially at takeoff and during the upshift to second gear. The RS4 is available only with a 6-speed manual transmission, a good albeit not great unit with more aggressive gear ratios than that found in the S4. The brakes have been completely redone for the RS4 with much larger vented brake disks on both the front and rear wheels which are extremely powerful but are hindered by the poor pedal feel. The car has been lowered about 20mm (approx 0.8 in) compared with the S4 and even with the large 18 inch wheels, the ride is supple and compliant. The control arms of the four-link front suspension and the swivel bearings are made of aluminum. The spring/shock absorber units have been retuned to suit the modified axle weights and axle geometry. The familiar Quattro all-wheel-drive system is complemented by electronic traction and skid control, electronic brake force distribution, electronic differential lock and a drive-by-wire system. All these features make for a very safe car however they somewhat limit the RS4's reflexes and driving excitement. Nonetheless the RS4 is one of the fewest ways to get into a five-door supercar that is roomy and practical and practically a bargain at just over $62K. The Audi RS4 is the first model to be created and developed in conjunction by both Quattro GmbH and Audi AG and no more than a few cars a day are built at the Quattro plant in Neckarsulm. - by Traian Popescu
