While the previous
Audi S4 did not have the outright speed of
BMW's
M3, it was certainly a gem of a car that did not need an outlandish output to assert itself. Apparently,
Audi didn't notice, because the newest S4, introduced at the 2002 Paris show and based on the A4 introduced at the 2001 New York show is equipped with a 4.2-liter V8! No other manufacturer in this crowded class has dared stuff 8-cylinders into their car, and some go by with less than 6.
Audi's 8 gives 344 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque over a broad spread. Being normally aspirated, the engine should respond more quickly than the previous S4's 250-hp twin-turbo V6. Though extra weight was originally a concern,
Audi says that weight-saving measures have made the V8 no heavier than the turbo V6.The horses go from the V8 through a six-speed manual tranny (a 6-speed auto will be offered later in 2003), are routed to all four wheels through Quattro and arrive at the 235/40R18 tires. Other trick running gear includes sport-tuned springs, shock absorbers and anti-roll bars, larger 345-mm and 300-mm rear brakes and quicker steering. The S4 comes with Recaro seats, carbon-fiber trim and, as an option, leather/Alcantara seating. Finally, wagon fans rejoice because this S4 will also be offered in Avant trim, great for all your high-speed grocery-getting jaunts. - by Traian Popescu
