It was in 1994 that the W202 generation Brabus C V8 was launched, easily outperforming the in-house C43 AMG model that hit the road a few years later. After being introduced at the 2000 Paris Motor Show, the W203 C V8 is ready to perform an encore in 2001, on paper at least. The 0.3 second difference to 62 mph between the C V8 and C32 AMG is certainly feasible, possibly even conservative, considering the horsepower and torque advantage for the Brabus. The engine is a 5.7-litre version of that found in the S500 and an identical unit to that in Brabus' own S5.8. The displacement increase is achieved through a custom block, a crankshaft with longer stroke and larger pistons. In addition, the cylinders are fine-machined and fitted with custom camshafts, the engine electronics are reprogrammed and a stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with metal catalysts, built specifically for the C V8 is fitted. The tranny is still a 5-speed automatic.
The result: 60 mph goes by in 4.7 seconds, 62 in 4.9 and a top speed of 183 mph (294 km/h). The ability to effortlessly burn rubber is another asset of the C V8. With the ESP switched off, the CV8 lights up its back tires with abandon, leaving a cloud of white smoke in the air as it blasts off into the distance. The tail can be easily flicked out with a stab on the throttle pedal, resulting in some spectacular power slides.
30 mm lower sport springs, Sachs dampers, thicker anti-roll bars, a new
front spoiler and 235/35ZR19 tires in the front with 265/30ZR19 units in the
back complete the handling package (note the immense 19 inch wheels). The ride
is firm at low speeds but body control and stability are particularly
impressive at high speeds and thorough sweeping bends. Six-piston aluminum
fixed brake calipers and 355mm (13.98 inch) perforated and ventilated discs on
the front axle, with 300mm (11.81 inch) discs and four-piston aluminum fixed
calipers on the rear as well as ABS provide stopping power. The interior gets
the full leather treatment on the seats and door panels, while other additions
include a recalibrated speedo which reads up to 200mph for UK versions. And the
price: approx 70,000 GBP in the UK, 180,000 DM in Germany. - by Traian Popescu
