Holden Commodore SS - SS-V VE

Holden Commodore SS - SS-V VE Photo 284 The Australian market poses some unique requirements, which explains why the Opel Rekord received a strengthened chassis and V8 power before being renamed a Commodore in 1978, or why the Monaro-based Pontiac GTO is 500lb heavier than a Corvette. We didn't enjoy the GTO as much as we promised we would, and we hope that doesn't deter GM from taking a swing at globalization once again, because we really, really want a sedan like the Commodore SS. The Zeta platform is heading to North America, where it will underpin anything from Buicks to Pontiacs, and the Tremec T-56 six-speed manual gearbox and 6.0L LS2 V8 are already here, under the skin of the Corvette C6. What we need is a veritable visionary to put them together, and create the Holden Commodore SS. This isn't really new to the Aussies; they've been doing it for years…Both the SS and SS-V (19 inch wheels, premium sound, dual climate control, etc…) have six forward speeds, but you won't be needing them much unless your priorities are fuel economy (kind of a low point here anyway) or thrashing the occasionally unloved Tremec. The V8 has enough torque to get you around without bothering which such vulgarities as shifting gears. The new stronger structure, standard LSD, MacPherson-strut front and multi-link rear suspension give great grip and little body roll, but the ride is noticeably better with the 18-inch wheels standard on the SS. The brakes are strong and the steering has decent feel in this application too. One of the most pleasing aspects is the interior, with its neat center stack and integrated LCD screen, shapely seats and flat-bottomed wheel – it's one of the best ever in a GM product. In Australia, the SS-V sells for the equivalent of about 40K USD, which is not Impala SS money, but you truly are getting a very complete and well-sorted piece of kit for your money. In fact, as an overall package, it is probably a better deal than the soft and forgettable Impala or the friskier Grand Prix, which also feature V8 engines and RWD. The technology was developed jointly on two continents; it would make nothing but sense to the consumer to share the finished product as well. - by Traian Popescu
