The original G35 was a success because it offered power, value and good looks. The mission is decidedly more difficult for the second generation G, because competitors such as the Lexus IS350, BMW 335i and Acura TL have encroached on its territory and can claim those selling points as their own.
With 306 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque and a 7600 rpm redline, available AWD and a starting price of only about $33K USD, the new G35 hasn’t lost its old habits, but the new car now has a broader appeal. Opting for the Sport package with a six-speed manual (the auto five-speed is a good unit, too) and aggressive 18-inch Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires brings powerful 13-inch brake rotors front and back, firmer rear dampers, harder steering-rack bushings and a viscous LSD. It's the setup to have if you're prepared for a stiff ride and it gives the G35 a nice sticky, playful, responsive setup that is the closest to the BMW 3-series in sports-sedan-land. Weight and dimensions gain has not plagued this G35 too badly, which packs on another 50 pounds.
The only real complaint concerns the variable-ratio steering, which makes delayed and abrupt changes in assist that hurts the car's fluidity. Four wheel active steering (FWAS) is also an option – a neat engineering exercise that makes no significant difference where one would expect it to be the most evident: on the racetrack. Another option to avoid is the $2100 Navigation Package, which displays its info via tunnel vision on a deeply recessed screen. Save the money for colourful, lovable, foldable maps – they have more personality. The rest of the interior is well designed and of high-quality, better than in a BMW.
A neat summary would probably clear up
matters here, so I will provide one: The Infiniti G and BMW 3 are again the
best sports sedans you can buy, and unless you have some clear, well defined
reason to buy something else, sticking with one of these standard bearers is no
bad move at all. - by Traian Popescu
