So you're looking for a nice, sporty luxury sedan. You like those Bimmers, but everyone and their sister has one (for a good reason). You saw that Jaguar S-Type, but it just didn't cut it. Sure, it's a Jag, it looks nice and it's a Jag, but your Granny would probably have more fun driving it than you anyway, and then there's that Lincoln LS, which ain't too bad either for a lot less dough. Well, mister (or missus of course), if you can afford it, we've got yer ride right here: the new and improved S-Type with a nice R badge on there for a little extra spice. How much spice? 400hp's (DIN) worth with an even healthier 408 lb-ft of twist.
The sheetmetal is pretty much the same with the exception of a touched up grille, chrome window surrounds, a deeper air dam, sill and rear spoiler and a set of 19 inch wheels. The interior has also been revised with a very X-Type-esque layout (not my personal favourite of interiors, but it'll do) and a dash of "sporting touches." Underneath, the R possesses bigger brakes, tighter steering, a 10-percent stiffer body shell, a revised CATS suspension system with double-wishbone front and rear setup and a first-in-class 6-speed ZF automatic transmission. This all adds a lot more edge to the previous car (which, unfortunately, had very little) but the real ooomph comes from the engine bay. All the models across the range receive updates, but the R takes the cake with a pumped up, supercharged version of the 4.2-litre AJ-V8 mill introduced in the XK8 (where it produces less than 300hp). All in all, you get M5 performance for a little less cash and a bit more exclusivity. Plus, it's a Jag. - by Traian Popescu
