This is going to make history. For the first time ever the Impreza WRX will be available in North America. The Japanese version uses a 2.0-litre horizontally-opposed turbocharged and intercooled 4-cylinder engine that produces 246 horsepower. Turbo lag is present below 3000 rpm, but in no way excessive. In Japan, the 250PS WRX reaches 60 mph in under 5.5 seconds; the rest of the world will have to be satisfied with just-under-sub-6 second performances. The reason for the change of heart – allowing the WRX to be sold in NA – comes from new technological developments that have allowed it to meet US emission requirements. As for fuel consumption, consider this: over the combined city/hwy cycle, the WRX still achieves a rating of over 24 mpg. A five speed manual transmission (or optional 4-speed automatic) transmits power to all four wheels. Torque is split 50/50 front/rear on manual cars, with a viscous limited-slip differential able to redistribute power. The WRX rides on 215/45ZR17 wheels all around and braking comes from disc brakes, vented 11.4-inchers up front and 10.3 in the back, with ABS.Throttle response, steering and braking are more akin to a sports car than a small wagon and are made even more delightful by the WRX's bargain blowout price. In it's home market it fetches 2.5 million yen, roughly $23,000 USD. Amenities include an AM/FM stereo, DVD player, air conditioning, front and rear spoilers and the fully-functioning front scoop. Sales in NA will start in early 2001 and Subaru plans to sell about 6000 WRXs per year, both in 4- and 5-door versions. - by Traian Popescu
