Well, it can decidedly fit in my mental boundaries. I agree with you, P!R@N@. These agreements may prevent cars from being designed and built as effectively as they could be because 1)there is no competition as everyone's car has the same performance and 2)a vehicle's full potential will not be experienced with these limiters. Anyway, I still really don't like these "gentlemen's agreements."------------------ IP: Logged |

It's funny, b/c the supra had 320hp from the factory, but was rated at 276 or so. With only like 2K you can get around 400+hp.------------------ A&F Auto Sales '93 Camaro Z28 A4: Custom CAI, TB Bypass FS: $8,000 "Bowtie 'til the day I die" IP: Logged |

In export markets, Toyota was honest about the Supra's power ratings, but in Japan, the factory claim was, of course, a mere 280 bhp. Which was a lie, and everyone in Japan knows it - just like they know your friendly Nissan dealer will practically slip the 400 bhp performance chip in your pocket when you drive your Skyline off the lot.The German manufacturers have a 155 mph limit mostly for insurance reasons, but there's probably also the fear of lawsuits from idiots whose family members might obliterate themselves at 170 mph on an autobahn. It gives them a legal escape hatch. The Japanese agreement is more of mystery. It MAY be due to insurance issues too, or it could've been from aftermarket tuners quietly getting in bed with the manufacturers. (The 112 mph governor, though, is a Japan MoT requirement from the early '80s, when half of Japan's young people seemed to be pulling a FAST AND THE FURIOUS on public roads). But let's face it - these self-restrictions may simply be a way of keeping regulation-happy governments off their backs. I'm sure that one day, some U.S. senator will get bored with chasing Hollywood and video game makers, and stake his/her reputation on the quest to protect citizens from "dangerously high horsepower outputs". But the Japanese limit is about to implode next year (sheesh - EVERYONE'S already broken it), and M-B won't apply the 155-rule to the new SLR (just as Porsche doesn't). ------------------

that makes a lot of sense kingfisher and like you said the SLR will break it and i think that is the type of car that should be allowed to not have to use the limiter.------------------ Porsche lover down to the golf clubs. IP: Logged |

Ah, Kingfisher again comes to the rescue with his omniscient powers. I suppose it makes sense and all, but at least they will soon be pretty much ignored, even more than they are already.I'm sure that one day, some U.S. senator will get bored with chasing Hollywood and video game makers, and stake his/her reputation on the quest to protect citizens from "dangerously high horsepower outputs".
That better not come true. ------------------ IP: Logged |

That would definately suck!!! However, The GT cars from Japan are so powerful from the factory, I don't see why they would underrate their cars, that is why people wouldn't pay 40K for the supra. As for the rx and zx, they are fast also, but their hp isn't as easy to attain as the supra's. However, the lancer, sti, and skyline are very powerful, and with them underrating the power people don't want to pay the money for the cars, that is where they come into trouble. I guess it's better for insurance though, oh wait I don't pay insurance, I'm now rolling on dealer plates, bwuahahahahaha. ------------------ A&F Auto Sales '93 Camaro Z28 A4: Custom CAI, TB Bypass FS: $8,000 "Bowtie 'til the day I die" IP: Logged |

there isnt much reason that is logical to us but the agreement must have made sense to them or else these cars wouldnt be so limited.------------------ Porsche lover down to the golf clubs. IP: Logged | |
