The Mercedes E55 AMG is the ultimate 4-door automatic sports
car. In the July 1999 issue of Motor Trend, the E55 AMG took part in a
comparison including cars like Ferrari 550 Maranello, Dodge Viper GTS,
Chevrolet Corvette, Acura NSX Zanardi, BMW M coupe and Porsche 911 Carrera 4.
The Mercedes thoroughly trounced the M coupe and Carrera 4 in the 0-60, quarter
mile, standing one-mile, 0-100-0 mph and 60-0 (where it tied the Ferrari for
first place) tests. The only place where the E55 could not keep up with real sports
cars was in the handling tests where it placed last in both slalom and skidpad
testing. If you're looking for a sports car camouflaged as a sedan, buy the
E55. At $69,100 its definitely a bargain compared with the Ferrari and Brabus E
V12 listed elsewhere on this page, however kind of pricey when compared with
the $40,000 Vette. It also completes the standing 0-100-0 mph run in 16 seconds
flat, 2.8 seconds faster than the E430. In the end this bad-ass Benz is fast
and roomy enough to thrill you and four of your closest friends and that's a
feat no sports car can perform. - by Traian Popescu
