Subaru Impreza WRX STi 2006
It's hard having an iconic name like WRX because always lingering overhead is a reputation or lofty standard to upkeep. This is the third generation Impreza, and since the WRX's introduction to North America in 2002, it has achieved somewhat of a worldwide cult status. A certain cachet attached to the Impreza's participation in the WRC doesn't hurt either, and just for now we'll overlook the fact that the blue Subbies haven't won a championship since 1997. The restyled '06 STi keeps its turbocharged 300-hp 2.5-litre flat-four of old, but adds a funkier front end, HID lamps with daytime running lights, dual stage airbags, wider wheels dressed in 225/45R17 rubber and a steering sensor input to the DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential) All-Wheel Drive system. All in all, it's a case of evolution rather than revolution, much in the vein of Mitsubishi's Evo Lancers. The STi still has 155-mph capability, hits 60mph in the fours, and delivers one of the best and most tractable year round compromises of any high performance car on the road. - by Traian Popescu
